Timing matters for gravel and aggregate delivery in Lignum, VA. Saturated clay after long wet spells is the usual hold-up here, and midwinter freezes pause work for short spells, so most crews pour patios and set pavers between spring and fall. Virginia Rock Supply stocks 21A, and delivers it by the ton when your subgrade is ready.

If you are bedding pavers or flatwork, the base under them decides how the surface looks in three years. Order the base and bedding material together and you can set both on the same schedule.

Materials for Lignum Projects

Patio and flatwork work starts below the surface. The bedding layer under pavers is thin, usually about an inch, and it only performs if the compacted base beneath it is thick enough to spread the load. On Piedmont clay, that base carries the whole patio.

Start with 21A. It is the standard Virginia driveway base, a dense-graded mix with enough fines to pack hard. Compacted in lifts, it gives pavers and slabs a stable platform that will not pump or shift. Where you want a coarser, lower-fines base that drains a little better under a pad, 21B is the alternative, though it packs less tightly.

The bedding layer itself is usually screenings, also called stone dust. Screened fine and consistent, it screeds to a flat plane for paver and flagstone bedding and holds the joints tight. For tight bedding and paver joints at a small washed size, #89 Crushed Stone is a common choice.

Drainage behind and under flatwork matters as much as the base. #8 Crushed Stone works for pipe bedding and porous backfill behind walls, and #57 Stone handles French drains and driveway topping. Many Virginia suppliers call #57 stone 3/4 inch stone, so the two names point to the same material.

Ground and Conditions in Lignum

Ground here is heavy clay subsoil, often red, weathered in place over a thick layer of soft, decayed rock called saprolite. It drains slowly, so the base has to carry the load rather than the soil under it.

A thin base shows its failure mode fast on this ground. Water sits in the clay, the base pumps under foot traffic, and within a season you see settled corners and rocking pavers. The answer is a solid base: build the 21A in lifts on firm ground, compact each lift before the next one goes down, and give water a way out.

Runoff is the other problem. Clay sheds water quickly in summer thunderstorms and in the heavy rain that tropical system remnants bring, so surface runoff and puddling collect at the low edge of a patio or pad. Shape the grade away from the flatwork and put a drainage layer where water wants to sit.

Bare Piedmont clay also erodes easily. Cleared slopes, building sites and ditches lose soil in heavy rain, and stream banks scour after storms. Seed or cover bare ground before the next front moves through, and armor the outlets that carry water off the site.

Delivery to Lignum and the Surrounding Area

Order online and choose your quantity. Bulk material is sold by the ton or by the cubic yard, and the two are not the same measure. A yard is a volume, a ton is a weight, and the number of tons in a yard changes with the material, so the same yardage of 21A and of screenings will not weigh the same.

Estimate by volume first. Multiply length by width by depth in feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, and add a little for compaction and spillage. If you would rather skip the math, use the calculator on the product page, enter your dimensions, and it will return the tonnage for that material.

Virginia Rock Supply delivers bulk loads across Culpeper County, including Culpeper, Brandy Station, Boston, Elkwood and Jeffersonton. Tell us where the truck can set the pile so it lands close to the work and clear of the driveway.

Questions from Lignum Buyers

What gravel is best for a driveway in Lignum?

For most drives here, start with 21A. If you want a coarser, lower-fines mix that drains better, 21B works as the base layer. Top either one with driveway gravel for the wearing surface, and add #57 stone where water crosses the drive.

How much material will my project need?

Measure the area and the depth you want, convert to cubic yards, then let the calculator turn that into tons for the material you picked. Depth drives the number more than anything else, so a patio base built thick takes far more material than a thin topping layer over an existing drive.
