Every job this sand is bought for is a finishing job, and finishing jobs are the ones the weather dictates. Damp sand will not sweep into a flagstone joint, will not screed to a clean line, and will not mix into a mortar you can strike properly. In a state that gets humid summers, thunderstorms through the warm months and long gray wet spells either side of winter, the realistic plan is to watch for a run of dry days and have the material already on site when it arrives. Mason Sand is worth ordering ahead for exactly that reason.
Fine, pale and washed: what a load looks like on the tarp
Size is ultra-fine with a consistent grain, and the grading is washed to take out clay, silt and organic material. Run a handful through your fingers and there is no grit range in it, which is precisely the property the jobs below depend on.
- It screeds to a true line because every grain is about the same size.
- It sweeps into a narrow joint rather than bridging across the top of one.
- It feels soft rather than sharp underfoot and in the hand, which is why it ends up in sandboxes and on courts.
- It holds a surprising amount of water, and a wet pile behaves nothing like a dry one.
That last point is the practical one. Keep the pile covered between delivery and use, and give a rained-on pile time to give the water back before you screed or sweep with it.
Mortar mixes, a screeded bedding course and a pit the water can leave
Four places it earns its keep, with the condition attached to each.
- Mortar, grout and stucco. As the fine aggregate in a mix, the even grain is what lets the material spread and strike to a clean face. Follow the mix design for the work rather than a general ratio.
- Bedding under pavers. A thin, screeded setting course on top of a compacted base. Thin is the operative word, and the next section explains why.
- Joints in interlocking paver and flagstone work. Swept in dry, worked into the joint, and topped up after the first few rains as it settles.
- Play areas and courts. Washed and soft, it suits a sandbox or a volleyball surface. Build the pit so water can leave the bottom of it, because in this climate a sealed sand box becomes a standing puddle by the second week of August.
Three jobs it will not hold: a shed pad, a rock garden bed and a splash area
The same fineness that makes it good at the jobs above disqualifies it from these.
| The job | What goes wrong | Order instead |
|---|---|---|
| A shed or garage pad base | Fine sand does not lock up under load. The pad settles at a corner and the door stops closing | 21B compacted in lifts, or 21A under something heavier |
| A xeriscape or rock garden bed | It blows, it washes, and it grows weeds within one season. It is a bedding material, not a ground cover | Pea Gravel or River Rock for a bed that stays where it is put |
| A downspout splash area | Concentrated roof water cuts a hole in fine sand on the first real thunderstorm | #57 Stone or Drain Rock, sized to take the flow |
The pattern is consistent: as soon as a job involves carrying weight, resisting moving water or being exposed to wind, this is the wrong material.
Bedding depth under flagstone, and why a thicker layer moves
More sand under a paver is not more support. It is more room for the paver to sink into.
- Keep a screeded bedding course thin and even. It levels the units; it does not carry them.
- Screed it, then set into it. Compacting the sand first removes the very property that lets a paver seat.
- Build the load-carrying layer underneath out of compacted dense-graded base, to a thickness that suits what will sit or drive on it.
- Where flagstone is being set on a dry-laid patio, a deeper sand bed is how you get rocking slabs, not how you get level ones.
- Contain the edges. A bedding course with an open edge migrates out sideways, and the patio follows it.
On slow-draining Piedmont clay and on low Coastal Plain lots the base and the drainage under it matter more than anywhere else, because sand held against saturated ground stays saturated.
Sand for a 9 by 12 sandbox and 60 feet of flagstone joints
Square feet times depth in inches divided by 12 gives cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards.
- Example, a sandbox 9 ft by 12 ft filled to 10 inches: 108 square feet x 0.833 = 90 cubic feet. 90 / 27 = 3.3 cubic yards.
- Example, a flagstone path 60 ft long and 3 ft wide with a 1 inch bedding course: 180 square feet x 0.0833 = 15 cubic feet. 15 / 27 = 0.6 cubic yards.
- Example, a 12 ft by 14 ft paver patio with a 1 inch bedding course: 168 square feet x 0.0833 = 14 cubic feet. 14 / 27 = 0.5 cubic yards.
This site publishes roughly 2,700 lb per cubic yard for mason and washed sand, about 1.35 tons per yard, and that weight is approximate: the sandbox above is 3.3 x 1.35 = roughly 4.5 tons, with the flagstone bedding course about 0.8 tons and the patio bedding course about 0.7 tons.
Joint sand is harder to estimate than bedding sand because it depends on joint width and depth, so allow for topping up rather than trying to calculate it precisely. The sand calculator converts cubic yards into tons for this material, and there is a paver sand calculator for bedding work specifically.
What carries the load underneath, and what sweeps in on top
Three layers, three materials, and problems start when one of them is asked to do another's work. The compacted base carries. This sand levels and fills. The paver or the slab is the surface. Where a firmer joint filler is wanted on a path that sees a hose or a leaf blower, Screenings are the coarser alternative.
