Whether you are building a drive in Northern Virginia, draining a low lot near Chesapeake, firming up a clay pad in the central Piedmont or topping a path in a western valley county, where do you order bulk gravel and aggregate delivery across Virginia? Right here. Virginia Rock Supply sells 21A, stone, sand, soil and mulch by the ton, delivered to your job. 21A is the standard Virginia driveway base. It matters because Virginia ground changes fast: heavy red clay over decayed rock across the Piedmont drains slowly, so your base has to carry the load.
Materials Delivered Across Virginia
Order by the job, not by the label. Here is what most Virginia customers ask for and what each material is built to do.
21A is the one to start with. 21A carries more fines and packs tighter than 21B, so it is the pick for driveways, parking pads, and shed and patio bases. Order 21A first, then top it.
21B is the coarser, lower-fines base. It drains a little better than 21A but packs less tightly, so it suits base under drives and pads where you want water moving. Order 21B.
Virginia suppliers often call it 3/4 inch stone. Order #57 Stone, or go smaller with #67 Stone and #8 Crushed Stone for pipe bedding and paver joints.
Under pavers and flagstone, screenings set the bed and level fine. Order Screenings for bedding, path surfacing and leveling under flatwork.
For sand, Mason Sand handles brick and block work and paver joints, while Washed Sand levels and beds under slabs.
For soil, Top Soil preps lawns and beds over red clay or thin, sandy ground, Garden Soil fills raised beds, and Fill Dirt raises grade before the 21A goes down.
Ground and Climate Across Virginia
What you order changes with the ground under it. Starting from the soil tells you how deep your base has to go and where water will sit.
In Tidewater and the Coastal Plain, layers of sand, silt and clay were laid down as old sea and river sediment rather than weathered rock, on flat, low ground. Sandy spots drain quickly. Clayey, marshy low ground stays wet, so drainage stone and a raised pad matter more than depth. Frost is set by each city or county, about 12 inches in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake.
The Northern Virginia Piedmont is mostly clay-rich soil weathered from Piedmont rock, with a Coastal Plain strip where shrink-swell marine clay occurs. Shrink-swell clay moves, so the base has to be thick and compacted. Frost runs 24 inches in Fairfax and Prince William counties.
Across Central and Southside Piedmont, heavy red clay subsoil sits over a thick layer of soft, decayed rock called saprolite. It drains slowly, so the base carries the load. Frost is 18 inches in Henrico, Goochland, Campbell and Madison counties.
West of the Blue Ridge, the Valley and Ridge zone has limestone valley floors with karst, where sinkholes and caves occur and bedrock often sits close to the surface. Water sinks into the limestone instead of running off. Frost is 24 inches in many valley counties, deeper at high elevation in Bath County.
Timing follows the same split. Coastal jobs are held up by wet spells and the late-summer to fall storm season, Piedmont jobs by saturated clay, and jobs in the Blue Ridge, western valleys and coalfields by snow and frozen ground in winter.

How to Order and Size a Load
Order online. Choose your material, then choose a quantity by the ton or by the cubic yard. Tons work best for stone and base, since weight is how it is sold and hauled. Yards work better for soil, sand and mulch, where volume is easier to picture.
To estimate, measure the length and width of the area, decide how deep you want the material, and multiply. A materials calculator does that math for you and gives the result in tons or yards. For a driveway, plan on a compacted 21A base before any surface stone. For a drain, depth and pipe size set the stone volume.
Before the truck arrives, clear a spot the truck can reach and dump. Mark any sprinkler heads, low wires or soft ground. Tell us where the pile goes, and keep vehicles clear of the drop zone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Virginia
Which stone is best for drainage in Virginia?
For most drainage jobs, #57 stone is the answer. For pipe bedding and paver joints, step down to #8 crushed stone. For heavy drainage, construction entrances and trench bottoms, order #4 crushed stone.
What do I need to have ready for a bulk delivery?
Have a clear, firm spot the truck can reach, and mark anything you do not want driven over, such as sprinkler heads, low wires or soft ground. Decide where the pile should sit so you can move material from it. If your ground is soft clay or wet low ground, tell us, because the truck needs solid footing to dump safely.
What is the best base material for a patio in Virginia?
21A is the best base for a patio in Virginia. Compact it in lifts, then bed your pavers on screenings for a fine, level surface. In shrink-swell clay areas, a thicker compacted 21A base keeps the patio from moving.
