Aggregate delivery across Virginia

Stone commonly used in Virginia includes granite, traprock (diabase) and valley limestone. Orders are delivered by dump truck to jobs from the Blue Ridge, the Shenandoah Valley and the Chesapeake Bay, with delivery included in the price.
Common projects here include 21A driveways, drainage through red clay and horse farm footing. Piedmont clay and Valley limestone behave nothing alike. West of the Blue Ridge a base sits on rock and drains; east of it, the clay needs the base to carry the load. Frost goes to about 18 inches in Virginia, so plan base depth around it.

The decision behind a material order in this state is rarely which stone looks right in a photograph. It is which of three grounds the work is standing on: sand and silt with water close to the surface east of the Fall Line, clay that drains slowly through the Piedmont, or limestone with rock near grade west of the Blue Ridge. Depth, drainage detail and the choice between a dense-graded base and a washed size all follow from that single answer, so gravel delivery is worth booking after it rather than before.
Sand, high water and storm tide east of the Fall Line
Across Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore, the Northern Neck and the Middle Peninsula the profile is layered sand, silt and clay laid down as old sea and river sediment. The ground is flat and low, so water has nowhere to run. Sandy patches drain fast while the marshy pocket twenty feet away holds water for days, and a pad built to one depth across both will settle at one end.
Jobs here usually start with Fill Dirt to lift the grade, then a compacted course of 21A over it. Where water needs a route out, #57 Stone or Drain Rock keeps its voids open in a way a fines-bearing base never will. Along the Bay and the tidal creeks, RipRap is the material that stays put under wave action and storm tide. Frost here is shallow, around 12 inches in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake, so drainage rather than depth is what protects the work.
Red clay that leaves the base carrying the load
Through the Richmond, Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Danville and Martinsville areas the subsoil is heavy clay, often red, weathered in place over a thick layer of soft decayed rock. It takes water in slowly and gives a base almost no help, which is why thinning the compacted layer to save a ton is the most expensive saving on the job. Summer thunderstorms and the remnants of tropical systems shed straight off it.
That ground makes 21A the standard driveway base and pushes the surface decision toward Driveway Gravel or a washed size on top. For a patio, Screenings give a setting bed that stays level once the base beneath it is right. For a lawn over clay, Top Soil is the layer seed actually roots into. Frost is set locality by locality, 18 inches in Henrico, Goochland, Campbell and Madison counties among others.
Marine clay and a 24-inch frost line in Northern Virginia
Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Fauquier and the corridor south to Fredericksburg sit on clay-rich soil weathered from Piedmont rock, with diabase ground through the Culpeper Basin and a strip of shrink-swell marine clay along and east of I-95. Winters swing across freezing more often than anywhere else in eastern Virginia, and Fairfax and Prince William counties set frost at 24 inches. Marine clay swells wet and shrinks dry, so a base laid on it wants tight compaction and somewhere for surface water to go before it ponds.
Karst, ridge slopes and rock close to grade west of the Blue Ridge
In the Shenandoah, Roanoke and New River valleys, the Alleghany Highlands and the southwest, limestone and dolostone valley floors carry karst: sinkholes, caves and bedrock often within a spade's depth. Water there goes down into the rock rather than across it, so concentrated runoff off a new drive can open or enlarge a sinkhole. On the Blue Ridge Plateau around Floyd, Carroll, Grayson and Galax, and in the steep hollows of Buchanan, Dickenson, Wise and Norton, soil is thin over hard rock and slopes wash out in heavy rain.
Work here leans on coarse material: 21B where a lower-fines base is wanted, #4 Crushed Stone for trench bottoms and site entrances, and Railroad Ballast under equipment standing. Spread runoff out rather than channeling it.
21A and 21B are VDOT size designations. They are how material gets asked for in this state, not a certificate arriving with the truck, so hold your own spec against the grading shown on the product page before you order.
Booking gravel delivery once the ground has named the material
Measure the area, settle the depth, and run it through the material calculators, which convert feet and inches into cubic yards and tons using each product's own published weight. Open the product page from the full material list, set the quantity and pick a date. Delivery is arranged at checkout from the ZIP code you enter, and the truck needs a clear route and firm ground to raise its bed on, which the delivery page sets out. If the approach is narrow or the lot is soft, Virginia Rock Supply would rather hear about it before the load is built than on the morning it arrives. The ordering questions page covers what comes up next, and who is behind this storefront sets out what happens once checkout is done.
