Everything You Need to Know About Crushed Concrete

Recycled crushed concrete

Red clay in the Piedmont can need a base that carries the load instead of relying on the soil below it. Crushed Concrete contains angular recycled concrete pieces and fines that work together under compaction, creating a dense layer for driveways, pads, and access paths. In the Shenandoah Valley and west of the Blue Ridge, the ground conditions can differ from clay-heavy sites farther east.

Prepare the subgrade, then place and compact the material in successive layers with light moisture as needed. The fines fill spaces between larger fragments, while the broken concrete faces help the base hold together as it settles. Use this material below the finished surface; a washed, open-graded stone is the better choice for drain pipe bedding or a clean drainage bed.

Common Uses

Driveway & Parking Pad Base

For new or rebuilt driveways and parking pads, crushed concrete works as a base layer. Install it in layers and compact each one to create a firm foundation for traffic. It helps limit ruts and potholes, and can be left as the travel surface or covered with driveway gravel for a neater appearance.

Road Base & Access Roads

For private roads, equipment yards, farm lanes, and jobsite entry points, crushed concrete works as a base layer. It supports heavy machinery and truck traffic while creating an all-weather route for work after rain.

Sub-Base for Patios, Walkways & Pads

A crushed-concrete layer beneath pavers, paths, sheds, and hot tub pads distributes weight to help the finished area stay even. The coarse aggregate allows more water through than native clay, helping reduce water held beneath the surface. Put down sand or screenings as a bedding layer before installing pavers.

Fill & Backfill

For low-area fill, grade buildup, retaining-wall backfill, and footing backfill, crushed concrete provides an economical structural material. When compacted, its angular fragments form a stable layer that is less apt to wash away or become muddy than soil fill.

Why Choose Crushed Concrete

Lower Cost Than Quarried Base

Since it is recycled material rather than newly quarried stone, crushed concrete generally carries a lower cost per ton than crushed stone base. At every order size, it is priced below driveway gravel, which can reduce costs on larger access roads and driveways.

Compacts Hard and Stays Put

Under compaction with a roller or plate compactor, the fines and angular pieces fit tightly together. As the layer settles, cement paste left on the concrete can contribute to binding. This forms a dense base that helps resist washouts, ruts, and shifting.

Recycled and Responsible

Crushed concrete puts demolished concrete back into use rather than sending it to a landfill, while reducing the amount of newly quarried stone needed.

Versatile Base and Fill

Crushed concrete can serve as general fill, base beneath driveways and parking pads, support for access roads, and sub-base below sheds or patios. A single delivery can supply material for many project base and fill needs.
