Two materials on this site measure about 3/8 inch and behave like opposites. One is naturally rounded river-worn stone in tans, creams, grays, browns and the occasional red. The other is angular crushed rock of the same nominal size, with sharp faces that lock against each other. Order the wrong one and the path either shifts under every footfall or cuts up bare feet, and nothing about the photographs on a product page tells you which is which.
Rounded pea gravel set beside the crushed sizes it gets confused with
| Material | Shape and size | What that gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Pea Gravel | Naturally rounded, about 3/8 inch, mixed warm colors | Comfortable underfoot, drains freely, rolls and travels unless contained |
| 3/8" Crushed Stone | Angular, same nominal size | Stays put on a slope and packs tighter, sharper to walk on |
| #89 Crushed Stone | Angular, small washed size | Joints and tight bedding rather than an exposed surface |
| Walkway Gravel | Graded crushed path stone | A firmer path surface with fines in the mix to bind it |
| River Rock | Rounded, 1 to 3 inch | The same look at a much larger scale, for beds and creek lines |
The single difference that matters is shape. Rounded pieces cannot lock, so they stay loose, roll underfoot, and move where the ground falls away or where a tire turns. Every strength and every weakness on this page follows from that.
Three jobs put to it: a garden path, a rural lane and a patch being seeded
A garden path is where pea gravel belongs. It drains after a thunderstorm instead of holding a puddle, it is kind underfoot around beds and seating, and the warm color mix sits well beside planting without looking like a construction material. Contain it and it will hold its line for years.
A long rural lane is the job it cannot do. Under turning tires rounded stone rolls rather than interlocking, so it pushes out to the edges, gathers in the middle and gives no grip on a grade. That lane wants Driveway Gravel over a compacted 21A base instead.
A patch being prepared for new lawn is not a gravel job at all. Seed needs a soil bed, so that one belongs with screened Top Soil. Rounded gravel does appear around the edges of such work, as a border strip or a downspout run where turf refuses to establish, and that is a good use of a small quantity.
Depth on a garden path, and the edge that keeps it off the lawn
Plan the containment before the depth, because containment is what makes the depth hold.
Rounded gravel needs a firm edge on every side that is not already retained. A steel or aluminum edging strip, a brick or paver curb, a buried timber, or a path cut in below the surrounding grade all work. Without one, the material migrates onto lawn, into beds and down any fall.
For a walking path, a shallow layer over a prepared base is more comfortable and more stable than a deep loose one. A deep layer feels like walking on ball bearings and takes a whole season to find its level. Put a base under the path where the ground is soft or slow-draining, because rounded stone pressed into wet Piedmont clay disappears into it. For a play area, depth is decided by what the surface is there to do rather than by appearance, and the base below it still has to drain.
On a fall, expect movement and design for it. Break a sloping route into short level runs with a step or a timber riser between them rather than one continuous grade.
Figures for a 52 foot path, a lane it should not surface, and a bed border
Length in feet by width in feet, times depth in inches divided by 12, divided by 27 gives cubic yards. This site publishes roughly 2,800 lb per cubic yard for pea gravel, about 1.40 tons per yard. Treat that as approximate.
- Example, a garden path 3 ft wide and 52 ft long at 3 inches: 156 sq ft x 0.25 = 39 cubic feet. 39 / 27 = 1.4 cubic yards, roughly 2.0 tons.
- Example, a border strip beside a patch being seeded for new lawn, 2 ft wide and 70 ft long at 2 inches: 140 sq ft x 0.167 = 23.3 cubic feet. 23.3 / 27 = 0.9 cubic yards, roughly 1.2 tons.
- Example, and a caution: a long rural lane 10 ft wide and 300 ft long at 3 inches works out at 3,000 sq ft x 0.25 = 750 cubic feet, 750 / 27 = 27.8 cubic yards, roughly 39 tons. That is a large quantity of a material that will not stay on the lane, which is the arithmetic argument for using a graded crushed stone there instead.
All three are worked illustrations, not jobs that were built. Because the material is open and rounded it does not consolidate much, so the depth you spread is close to the depth you keep. Check your own dimensions in the pea gravel calculator, then choose a quantity and a delivery date on this page. Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code, so pick a tipping spot a loaded truck can reach and remember that loose rounded stone spreads out as soon as it lands.
