Winter changes how you plan gravel and aggregate delivery in Appalachia, VA. Snow and ice on steep grades stop work more than anything else, so most crews pour pads and finish flatwork between spring and late fall. Virginia Rock Supply stocks 21A and the bedding materials that go under pavers, and we deliver by the ton to Wise County.

Order early in the season. A wet week on a steep hollow road can push a delivery back, and the ground you expose needs cover before the next storm.

Materials for Appalachia Projects

Most flatwork here starts with 21A. It is the standard Virginia driveway base. It is also what you compact before any paver goes down.

The bedding layer above that base matters just as much. For a paver patio, spread screenings at a uniform depth and screed it flat; the fines lock the pavers without letting them rock. Use Mason Sand for brick and block work and for tight paver joints. Washed Sand is the choice under slabs and for leveling beds.

Where a patio or walkway needs to shed water, build the drainage layer from washed stone. #8 Crushed Stone handles fine drainage, pipe bedding, and porous backfill behind a wall. #89 Crushed Stone fills joints and tight bedding at a smaller size.

Ground and Conditions in Appalachia

A patio base fails here in one direction: it sinks at the corners. The soil is thin and rocky over flat-lying sedimentary rock and coal beds, and much of it sits on steep, narrow hollows with little level land. In places the ground was disturbed by past coal mining.

When the subgrade is uneven or soft, a shallow 21A layer just bridges the soft spot and the slab or pavers settle. The fix is to excavate to a firm, uniform surface, then build the base in lifts and compact each one. Cut deeper on the fill side and plate-compact the edges, not just the middle.

Runoff drives the second failure. Steep slopes push heavy rain into narrow hollows fast, and water pours down steep drives. Everything you build should drain away from the structure, with a washed stone layer or a French drain where water collects. Road cuts, fills, and old mine ground erode fastest, so protect bare ground before a storm.

Frost is set by each county or city, and it goes deeper at high elevation than in the valley bottoms. Check the local requirement before you set footing or base depth.

Delivery to Appalachia and the Surrounding Area

Order online and pick the material and quantity. Bulk material is sold by the ton or by the cubic yard, and the two are not the same number. A ton of 21A covers less area than a ton of #57 stone, and damp sand weighs more per yard than dry. Work out your square footage, your depth, and the material density before you order.

For a patio, decide the base depth first, then the bedding depth, then convert to tons. A Walkway Gravel path takes far less material than a driveway pad at the same footprint, so measure each area on its own.

We deliver bulk loads to sites in Appalachia and across Wise County, including Big Stone Gap, Wise, Coeburn, Pound, and St. Paul. Tell us where the truck can turn around and how steep the last grade is. A narrow hollow road or a soft shoulder changes where we can set the load.

Questions About Gravel and Stone in Appalachia

What gravel is best for a driveway in Appalachia?

Start with 21A. It is the standard Virginia driveway base, and it holds up on the grades common here. Top it with Driveway Gravel for a tighter running surface. If you want a base that drains a little better, 21B is the coarser, lower-fines option, though it packs less tightly than 21A.

How much material will my project need?

Measure the length and width of the area, decide the depth, and let the calculator turn that into tons or yards. Base and bedding are different depths, so figure them separately. For a paver patio, count the 21A base and the screenings bedding as two numbers. A quantity calculator handles the conversion and accounts for compaction.

Get Your Appalachia Project Sized and Delivered

Use the quantity calculator to turn your measurements into tons, then order the material your project needs. If you are choosing between 21A and 21B, or deciding how deep the bedding layer should run, size each layer separately with the calculator before you order. What happens if the weather turns?

We would rather move a delivery than tear up your ground. If the site is too wet for the truck on the day, we will call you and rebook. Tell us in advance about any part of the approach that does not drain and we will plan around it.
